“You Got the Job!” Never Gets Old

Over the last two weeks, I have had one of the best parts of my job: calling students to tell them they were selected for internship opportunities they interviewed for.

Twelve students. Twelve phone calls. Twelve moments of excitement, disbelief, relief, and celebration.

And honestly? It never gets old.

Some students answered cautiously, unsure why they were getting a call. Others immediately started screaming or laughing the second they heard the news. A few were completely shocked they had been selected at all. Every single conversation reminded me of something important: there is something incredibly powerful about being chosen.

Remembering That Feeling

Those phone calls brought me right back to moments in my own life when I got “the call.” The excitement of knowing someone saw potential in you. The relief after wondering if you interviewed well enough. The validation that your preparation and hard work paid off.

It is easy to forget how meaningful those moments are once you have been in the workforce for years. But for students, especially those getting their very first opportunity, these moments can shape confidence for years to come.

And in today’s world, where students are constantly hearing about “ghost jobs” online and employers are saying they cannot find workers, these internship placements felt like a refreshing reminder that meaningful connections still matter.

Real students. Real employers. Real opportunities.

A Different Kind of Success Story

One story especially stood out this year.

We had one incredible student who ultimately was not selected for a position. Of course, that is disappointing for anyone, especially after putting yourself out there. But instead of frustration, she sent the kindest follow-up email thanking the employer for the opportunity to interview.

She shared that simply getting the chance to interview, her very first interview ever, made applying worthwhile because she learned so much from the experience.

Honestly, that level of professionalism and perspective was remarkable.

And the best part? Employers noticed.

Several employers shared how difficult the selection process was because the students were so well prepared, professional, and engaged throughout the interviews. That says a lot about the students themselves, but it also says a lot about preparation and support.

Why Preparation Changes Everything

There is something hopeful about hearing excitement on the other end of the phone when a student learns they got the job. It is a reminder that opportunities still matter, preparation still matters, and investing in young people still matters.

Behind every internship placement is a student taking a first step toward a future career. And sometimes all it takes is one employer willing to say yes.

Those twelve phone calls may have only lasted a few minutes each, but for those students, they represented something much bigger:

A beginning.
