The AI Genie Is Out Of The Bottle – What’s The Plan?
Many Millennials remember being told they could not use calculators in math class because, our math teachers assured us, we would not always have one in our pocket. Then came the smartphone. Today, 91% of U.S. adults own a smartphone, up from 35% in Pew Research Center’s first smartphone ownership survey in 2011 (Pew Research Center). The “calculator in your pocket” became a calculator, encyclopedia, camera, map, bank, translation tool, calendar, and tiny distraction rectangle all at once.
Some might recall when “computer class” meant a scheduled trip to the lab for games and typing practice. Others may remember a very different experience, where computer literacy was already being treated as a core skill with lessons on Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and how to do online research. The divide was real. In 1994, only 35% of U.S. public schools had internet access. By fall 2000, 98% did, but the student experience still depended heavily on how, when, and whether schools made technology part of actual learning (Cattagni and Farris 1).
Teachers were not wrong to worry about overreliance on new technology. They were facing a real instructional challenge. But history has made one thing fairly clear: when powerful tools become part of daily life and work, schools eventually have to teach students how to use them well.
Artificial intelligence is now sitting in that same uncomfortable chair. It is new enough to feel risky, fast-moving enough to feel exhausting, and powerful enough to raise legitimate questions about academic honesty, privacy, bias, and student thinking. Educators who are cautious about AI are not being stubborn. They are doing what good educators do: protecting learning. Still, schoolwide bans of AI may leave students underprepared for a world where AI tools are increasingly part of how work gets done.
AI literacy means more than knowing how to type a prompt into a chatbot. For students, it includes understanding what AI can and cannot do, checking outputs for accuracy, recognizing bias, protecting personal information, using tools transparently, and knowing when human judgment matters more than machine speed. California’s Department of Education has moved in this direction, too. Its 2025 guidance for TK to 12 schools emphasizes “learning about AI” and “learning with AI,” with a focus on thoughtful integration, student learning, ethical use, and human-centered decision-making (California Department of Education).
The workforce data points in the same direction. Lightcast’s contribution to the 2026 Stanford AI Index found that AI skills appeared in 2.5% of all U.S. job postings, a 55% increase from the previous year and a 297% increase from a decade earlier (Lightcast, “Stanford AI Index Report 2026”). California is not watching this trend from the sidelines. In 2025, California had 170,881 AI job postings, the largest volume of any state and 17.18% of the national total (Lightcast, “Stanford AI Index Report 2026”).
Just as important, AI is not only a computer science issue. Lightcast’s 2025 analysis of more than 1.3 billion job postings found that postings including AI skills offered a 28% salary premium, nearly $18,000 more per year, compared with postings without those skills (Lightcast, “Beyond the Buzz”). That does not mean every student needs to become an engineer. It does mean AI fluency is becoming part of the broader skills conversation, alongside communication, problem-solving, organization, and adaptability.
California’s education systems are already responding. In 2025, the Governor’s Office announced agreements with Google, Adobe, IBM, and Microsoft to expand access to AI training and tools for more than two million students in California public high schools, community colleges, and California State Universities (Office of Governor Gavin Newsom). The state framed this not simply as a technology initiative, but as workforce preparation tied to safe and ethical use, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
The same shift is appearing after high school. California Community Colleges launched an AI Fellows initiative designed to embed AI literacy across disciplines, including nursing, automotive technology, business, and liberal arts, rather than confining it to computer science departments (California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office). That matters for K-12 leaders because today’s students will not graduate into neat categories of “AI jobs” and “non-AI jobs.” They will enter workplaces where AI shows up in scheduling, customer service, research, drafting, design, data analysis, inventory, marketing, health care documentation, and many other ordinary workflows.
For schools, the question is not whether every assignment should involve AI. It should not. Students still need to read deeply, write independently, solve problems, build stamina, and sit with the productive frustration that learning often requires. The better question is where guided AI use can help students practice the kind of judgment they will need outside school.
That guidance can take many forms. Students might use AI to brainstorm study questions, organize notes, compare explanations, create a first-pass outline, generate a practice quiz, improve a schedule, help identify gaps in their argument, or revise a piece of writing after they have already done the hard thinking. Teachers might ask students to explain how they used AI, submit planning artifacts, reflect on what they accepted or rejected, or document where the tool was helpful and where it was wrong. The goal is not to make AI invisible. The goal is to make the learning process more robust and the use of AI more transparent.
This is where school leadership matters. A schoolwide AI approach does not need to begin with every teacher becoming an expert. It can begin with shared language, clear boundaries, age-appropriate expectations, privacy safeguards, and a few agreed-upon practices for transparency. It can also begin with permission to be imperfect. Schools did not become fluent in the internet overnight. They did not solve smartphones with one policy memo. AI will be no different. There will be awkward drafts, false starts, and probably a few moments when everyone quietly misses the overhead projector.
But the direction is clear. If students only learn that AI is forbidden, they may not learn how to question it, improve with it, disclose it, or use it responsibly. If they only learn that AI is magic, they may not develop the judgment to recognize when it is shallow, biased, inaccurate, or unnecessary. The middle path is more demanding, but it is also more honest: teach students to use AI as a tool, not a substitute for thinking.
For California educators, that middle path is both a challenge and an opportunity. It asks schools to protect academic integrity while also preparing students for a workforce that is already changing. It asks teachers to keep human learning at the center while helping students understand tools they will almost certainly encounter beyond the classroom. And it asks all of us to remember that the goal was never really computer literacy, calculator literacy, smartphone literacy, or AI literacy. The goal is student readiness.
