Helping Students Go from “I Don’t Know” to “I’ve Got Options”

If you’ve ever asked a high school senior, “What’s next?” and gotten a blank stare or a shrug, you’re not alone. According to the newly released 2025 Post-Graduation Readiness Report from YouScience, nearly 72% of students say they feel only moderately, slightly, or not at all prepared for life after high school.

That’s not just a confidence problem—it’s a clarity problem.

As the traditional four-year college pathway loses ground—with only 35% of the Class of 2024 choosing it, down from 55% in 2019—students are clearly looking for something different. Yet without guidance, they’re often unsure where to begin. Nearly 70% of graduates report lacking strong confidence in their post-grad plans. And among those headed to college, over 40% change their major, often more than once—a sign that early decisions are often based more on guesswork than on genuine self-understanding.

This lack of clarity about their future is costly because in college students will pay for changing their mind often sinking them further in debt, delaying their entry to the workforce and reducing their odds of completing at all.

Which brings us back to the value of getting it right—early.

Here’s where it gets even more telling:

  • 77% of students said they would’ve been more engaged in high school if they had better understood their aptitudes and career options.

  • 50% wished their schools had offered more work-based learning opportunities.

  • 39% said they received no help at all discovering their aptitudes.

And when asked what would have best prepared them for life after graduation? Students overwhelmingly pointed to aptitude-based assessments, one-on-one career counseling, and employer connected real-world experiences.

In other words: “Help me try things out and figure out who I am, please and thank you.”

This is exactly the kind of clarity, context, and confidence we aim to give students through our programs at Tomorrow’s Talent. Because when we pair tools like YouScience—which uncovers aptitudes and maps them to in-demand careers—with real-world experiences like internships and apprenticeships, students move from “I’m not sure” to “I have a plan.”

So if you’re a school leader wondering whether this stuff actually works: yes. It does. And yes, it’s a lot more effective than asking a 17-year-old to pick a college major like they’re choosing a pizza topping.

Want to help students connect passion with purpose? Start with aptitudes. Layer in meaningful work experiences. And maybe keep a sense of humor along the way.
